What Are We Leaving Behind

“What Are We Leaving Behind” is a series of light installations that combine reclaimed aluminium sheets from PCB (printed circuit board) production with handwoven forms inspired by rattan weaving. The works examine the intersection of technological residue and craft through material contrast, structural dialogue, and the interplay of light.

The project originated from sourcing discarded aluminium sheets and wood pulp boards from a local PCB factory. These materials, typically used only once in the production process and rarely recycled, are often left perforated with intricate patterns of holes. I was drawn to these incidental markings and began to consider how their inherent structures could be recontextualised through craft.

By integrating these industrial remnants with handwoven techniques, the works explore both contrast and affinity between two seemingly opposing systems: the ‘cold’, rigid precision of technological production and the ‘warm’, adaptive qualities of handmade practice. Despite their differences, both are subject to cycles of use and neglect. Through this material dialogue, the installations invite reflection on value, labour, and the afterlives of materials in contemporary culture.
