Maker, Artist, Craftivist
Amy Hsu Tzu Chen is a London-based Taiwanese maker, textile artist, and craftivist whose work explores gender issues and female experiences through traditional domestic crafts. She received her MA in Textiles from the Royal College of Art in 2024, and her work has been exhibited in Taiwan and the United Kingdom.
Chen specialises in handcrafting vessels using techniques passed down by female artisans—such as coiling basketry, hand embroidery, patching, and felting—which she reclaims as powerful forms of resistance and storytelling. Her practice intentionally positions these so-called “women’s work” methods as catalysts for social and cultural change.
Guided by an intuitive process that honours instinct and emotion, Chen creates abstract, metaphorical forms that offer a poetic lens into the collective female psyche—its traumas, dreams, and inner landscapes. She is currently developing interactive haptic and sonic experiences that subvert misogynistic language and gender norms, inviting audiences into sensory rituals that challenge and reimagine traditional power dynamics.
